Gap Program Goals

ARION Gap Year Program is a unique opportunity for an aspiring high level athlete.  An ARION Gap year athlete should be between the ages of 18 and 22.  ARION aims to help develop 2 young athletes in their rowing career by exposing these athletes to not only the training but more importantly the lifestyle and athletic choices that will fast track the athlete to success at the next level.  By living and training with the elite program, we believe that the selected athletes will gain more than just fitness, but also deepen their knowledge of the sport and of elite training, as well as their love of the sport.

Room and Board

Gap year athletes can live in athlete housing that is within a 6 minute walk of all training facilities, or may choose to love off-site.  Those choosing to live off-site will incur separate living expenses to be arranged outside of the ARION program.  While ARION does enjoy the occasional meal together, and ARION does provide a post practice fueling station, athletes should expect to be responsible for their own food.

Pricing

The ARION Gap year program is meant to be a long exposure program for the athlete; it can be as short as 3 months, but we prefer a 6 month or longer experience.  Price for the program is $2250 a month.  The price includes training, housing, travel, and equipment.  Potential additional costs would be international travel or choosing to fly to a place the team might otherwise drive

The ARION Summer Development Program is an integrated program which is led by Coach Dr. Michael Orr.  The program works closely with the ARION Elite team which is coached by Coach Eric "Cat" Catalano and is mentored by the members of the ARION Elite team.

A two-time winner of Britain’s Henley Royal Regatta, Dr. Orr has also won lightweight doubles at the Head of the Charles Regatta and elite pairs at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta. In 1987, he represented Great Britain in the pair at the World University Games.

As a coach, his crews have won at both the British National Championships and the US Masters National Championships. He is also a certified USA Triathlon Level I coach and has twice completed Ironman Wisconsin. Dr. Orr is currently a Professor of Art History at Skidmore.

Experience Expert Training

ARION is a program built around small boat skills. Significant emphasis is placed on teaching boat moving skills. For training, athletes use personal and club boats, C2 ergs, bike ergs, and road bikes.

Athletes are also encouraged to participate in cross-training outdoors when the weather permits. Hiking, biking, swimming, and running are excellent local options. For weight training, athletes can lift at a new designed gym on our premises.

Racing

Have your passport ready, the Summer Development program races at the ERA regatta in Montreal, ON and the Canadian Henley Regatta in St. Catherines, ON.  Both regattas are within driving distance.  During regattas, the entry fees, lodging, coaching, gear, and equipment are included in the program fees.  Plan to pay for your own food and shared transportation costs.
